Jouon was a Jesuit lecturer or teacher at St. Ignatius College, a part of the Jesuit Cathedral of Zikawei or modern Xujiahui in Shanghai. It was built between 1906-10 and called the “grandest Catholic Church in the Far East.”

Jouon produced this work of schematic maps as a simple introductory work on the commercial and logistical geography of mostly China but also the Far East. The work went through several editions attesting to its enduring success and popularity. This map focuses on Guangdong but also shows Hong Kong and the Island of Hainan. As with the other maps from this series, the map not only shows railways but also the newly functioning air postal routes.
