Miniature map of Guangzhou (Canton) published in the Missionary Sketches, the journal of the London Missionary Society. The map itself is based on a native Chinese map drawn by an unknown artist. A larger version of this map first appeared in The Chinese Repository, the first European journal of Sinology, in 1834. Our example is a reduced version specifically adapted to serve as the front cover of the April, 1835 edition of the Missionary Sketches. The illustration of the Chigang Pagoda is a unique addition to this edition of the map. Inside the pamphlet are descriptions of Guangzhou, an account of catastrophic recent flooding, and a report on the progress of Christian missionaries in China.
