Sketch map of Tsushima Island, north of Nagasaki in the Tsushima Strait between Japan and Korea. This map was published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society to illustrate a paper by Laurence Oliphant, First Secretary to the British Legation in Japan.
On 5 July, 1861, Oliphant and the other members of the Legation were attacked during the night be a group of ronin hoping to sever ties between Japan and the West. Oliphant defended himself with a hunting whip, but sustained serious injuries from a two-handed sword. He was sent back to England to recover, stopping briefly in Tsushima on his journey home. While in Tsushima, he discovered a secret Russian force occupying a secluded bay and negotiated with them to leave peacefully.
