Squier (1821-1888) was an American archaeologist and historian from New who in 1849 acquired a diplomatic position in Central America, negotiating treaties between Nicaragua, Hondura and El Salvador. In 1853, Squier visited the area to examine the suitability of a railroad across Honduras to join the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean, as well as to explore archaeological sites in the country.
