The map shows the expansive distances covered by Ralph Alger Bagnold (1896-1990), Bagnold (indicated using a solid line) and other explorers including Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs (using dashed lines) in the region. The sheet is split into two sections, and with a key map in the upper left. An additional left panel illustrates sections of ranges covered, describing the elevation and terrain. 

The author of the map, Ralph Bagnold, was a veteran desert traveller, having spent more than ten years in the Sahara in the twenties and thirties becoming an expert in the formation, movement, and location of sand dunes. He was the first modern European to record a journey across the Libyan Desert travelling east to west. He produced one of the cornerstone works on desert geology, "The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes" in 1939 and in 1940, he founded the Long Range Desert Group, a specialist desert scouting unit which was the inspiration for the SAS. His work was so lasting and influential that NASA have named an area of the Dunes of Mars "The Bagnold Dunes". Finally, if the name Bagnold seems familiar, he was the brother of Enid Bagnold, the famous author of the book "National Velvet".
