Woodblock map of China, Tartary, and Japan from the 1535 edition of Ptolemy's 'Geographia', published by Gaspar & Melchior Treschel with maps by Laurent Fries. This is one of only three maps in the atlas designed by Fries himself and not simply reproduced from earlier maps by Martin Waldseemuller. Fries's use of the name 'Zipangu' for Japan is drawn from the Travels of Marco Polo. There is a large illustration of the Great Khan seated on a throne in front of a horde of campaign tents.
