Exactissima Asiae Delineatio
Drawn by Carolus Allard and published by Jean Covens and Cornelius Mortier, this sumptiously coloured map is a fine example from the very end of the Dutch "Golden Age" of cartography. The cartouche features the figure of Asia surrounded by examples of the fabulous riches of the East. The strong decorative colouring was a shortlived attempt to compete head-on with the increasingly scientific and austere "modern" French school of map-making. The Dutch maps from this period remain some of the most striking ever produced. Clean tear backed at foot of fold. [AS701]
