L'Asie

Rare wall map of Asia with a richly illustrated border, a splendid cartouche, and several curious, outdated geographical features. Below the map are two panels of French text describing in great detail the history and geography of Asia. The borders are illustrated with 30 historical vignettes, most of which depict scenes from the Bible, such as the birth and death of Jesus and the division of the Earth by the sons of Noah. Some, however, depict more "recent" historical events, such as the Mongol conquest of China under Kublai Khan, the capture of Jerusalem during the Crusades, and the death of St. Francis Xavier, founder of the Jesuit order.
