Two maps showing C.S. Smith's travels in Kenya and Tanzania. The first shows a circular journey south from Kilwa to the Rovuma River (the border between Tanzania and Mozambique) and then back to Lindi on the coast. The second map shows a much shorter journey down the coast from Mombasa, Kenya to Tanga, Tanzania.
This map is general attributed to Charles Spencer Smith, an African-American Methodist Minister (later Bishop) who founded the first steam printing press in the United States owned by someone of African descent. He served in the Alabama state legislature after the Civil War and traveled extensively later in life, including to East Africa.
Printed colour. [AFR4864]
