A Map of the Country of Hottentots towards the Cape of Good Hope
Cape Town and environs as far east as Mossel Bay. The new colonies at Stellenbosch, Drakenstein, and Waveren are marked. The names of the native groups inhabiting each region are denoted in block capitals.
Salmon derived this map from the account of Peter Kolbe, a Dutch naturalist and the first official astronomer at the Cape. His Naauwkeurige beschryving van de Kaap de Goede Hoop (1727) was the first detailed description of the Cape Colony, and included information about the flora, fauna, and natural history of the region, as well as valuable accounts of daily life in the colony.
Salmon credits both the French and the English editions of Kolbe's book as sources for this map. [AFR5834]
