The map is elegant and exact with fine clear lettering. It represents a new phase in cartography, where accuracy and detail become more important than the decorative embellishments of the eighteenth century. Travel and commerce were rapidly increasing; the world was expanding, opening up to new forms of knowledge and culture. This map is part of a series of seminal works that embraced all of this new information and redefined map making, setting the standard of all cartographers that followed. Cary's work particularly inspired the Edinburgh school of cartography which included John Pinkerton and John Thomson. Original hand colour. [AFR5817]
