Carte Encyprotype L'Afrique
Adrien Brue's remarkable detailed and superbly engraved map of Africa shows the continent as it was known prior to the far reaching 19th century exploration of Livingston, Stanley and Baker.
Much of the interior is designated as "inconnue aux Europeens" and virtually the only detailed topographical features within this unknown region are the legendary "Montagnes de la Lune" [Mountains of the Moon]. The tracks of early explorers such as Mungo Park and Barrow are clearly marked, along with the extensive caravan routes across the Sahara.
The two inset maps depict the Mascareignes islands in their original French names, Bourbon (Réunion) and Isle de France (Mauritius). Visually impressive, and on a grand scale, this map is a masterly and important contribution to the cartography of the Continent.
