L'Afrique
A map of continental Africa in original colour with French text. The decorative cartouche in the top right corner depicts a native woman in classical pose with a lion at her feet. Lions were used frequently at this time as an allegory of Africa. The woman is flanked by trees and foliage. Much of central Africa has been left blank due to the limitations of European exploration during the 17th and 18th centuries as focus remained on the slave trade which only required costal bases. The real exploration of the African interior would start well into the 19th century. [AFR3524] (BC)
