First edition of Mitchell’s important map of the United States cities and their environs, here in its pocket form.

This map came out in two formats: the first and comparatively the more common was as a wall map, usually on rollers and backed on linen, consisting of an augmented version of a general map of the United States from the east coast to its western border set at the Mississippi-Missouri River. The map was also surrounded by a series of insets of either state capitals and their vicinity or important cities and their vicinity. The second format was as a pocket map, folded into a smaller leather case convenient for transport. It consisted of two maps, one showing the general map of the United States and the other shows the collection of city insets. This format seems to be relatively more unusual.

This example is the second map from the pocket version. The central panel is a detailed ethnographic, economic and geographical set of statistics of immense interest such as the amount of money earned from the mining of precious metals and employment numbers for various industries in 1840.
