The late 19th century was a period of immense growth for the city as the railways allowed residents who worked in the city to live further out in the suburbs and commute in. New suburbs, particularly in the west, northwest, and south sprang up to meet this new demand. Areas which two or three decades ago were still completely rural, such as Notting Hill, Stoke Newington, Hackney, and Clapham, are now shown as part of the urban fabric of London.
