Beautiful map of Iceland based on the model first used by the Hondius/Jansson and Blaeu families.
This is one of the last of a sequence of maps of Iceland which can be traced to the early 17th century. The original source was a map published in 1620 by Jodocus Hondius. He used Gudbrandur Thorlaksson's map of the late 16th century as a base but integrated it with information retrieved by the Dutch navigator and explorer Joris Carolus to produce a true masterpiece of art and science. This map is often quoted as being one of the most decorative of the whole cartographic canon of the Dutch Golden Age. The map design bears everything associated with that period. Sea monsters, a large elaborate cartouche, ships around the oceans and a magnificent erupting volcano, Mount Hekla, in the middle of the island.
The map was issued by several of the great Dutch publishing houses of the 17th century including Jansson and Blaeu. This example is one of the last of this sequence. Gerard Valk and Pieter Schenk purchased the cartographic copper plates from the heirs of several of the great Dutch houses including Jansson and Blaeu and re-issued them under their own imprint. It is difficult to know which plate they used for this example as the geography remained the same and they re-designed the cartouche.
As was often the case with these examples by Valk and Schenk, the original colouring is bright, full and of particularly fine quality. [SCAN2586]
