This early map of Barbados was is oriented to show north to the right of the page. It was first issued in 1708 in John Oldmixon’s “The British Empire in North America”. The map shows a great detail, particularly the names and placement of the plantations which formed the island’s wealth. The parishes correspond as they are now except St. Peters which is named “All Saints”. The coastline shows the danger’s of the reefs around the island while Bridgetown is guarded by James and Willoughby’s Forts.
Barbados became one of the most important English islands in the West Indies, hence Moll’s issue of a larger map of the island published in his Atlas Minor from the 1720s onwards.
