This magnificent folding wall map of Victorian London was published to show the new postal districts and the city's growing railway network. Completed railway lines are in red, while lines 'in progress' are in blue. Lines authorized by the House of Lords Select Committee in 1864 are drawn in light blue. These include:

- the Metropolitan Railway's westward extension from Paddington to South Kensington (completed in 1868);
- the Hampstead, Midland, North Western, and Charing Cross Junction Railway, an underground railway connecting Charing Cross and Euston and a precursor of the Northern Line's Charing Cross branch;
- a Great Eastern Railway line terminating at a proposed new Bishopsgate station
- the London & South Western Railway's 'Kensington, Hammersmith & Richmond' line

Though the map itself is undated, the state of the completed railway lines allow us to date this map quite precisely to 1865.
