Rare woodcut map of Pakistan and Afghanistan, based on the ancient Greco-Roman geography of Claudius Ptolemy.
Published in the 1535 edition of Laurent Fries's edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia". The map extends from the Straits of Hormuz in the west to the Indus River in the east. This is, in essence, Afghanistan and Pakistan as it was known to Alexander the Great. Very few names are recognizable with the exception of the River Indus. A settlement of Alexandria is named in the interior. The small vignette of a ruler refers to the King of Gujurat as a source of saffron.
