This important map of northeastern Arabia and Kuwait shows the route of Lieut. Col. Lewis Pelly on his journey from Persia to Riyadh.
Pelly, later to become General Sir Lewis Pelly, was a career officer in the British East India Company. He saw service in the whole of the Middle East, being Political Resident in Persia while undertaking this important embassy to Ryadh. In 1868 he also signed a treaty with Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani which established the independence of Qatar, the first international treaty recognising the new country.
