Angliae Regni Florentissimi Nova Descriptio, Auctore Humfredo Lhuyd Denbygiense
The first atlas map of England and Wales. Issued by Abraham Ortelius in his seminal atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
From 1570 onwards this map appeared continuously in the Theatrum until 1603 when it was replaced by Christopher Saxton's map. Due to its longevity and wide distribution, it became the standard geographical model for England and Wales for over thirty years. Geographically it is based on the surveys of the Welsh scholar, Humphrey Llhuyd and it is amply decorated with a large cartouche on the upper left as well as numerous ships and sea monsters.
French descriptive text on the verso. Coloured. [GB2108]
