The North Part of Great Britain
A small map of Scotland, or 'the North Part of Great Britain', from a pocket county atlas produced in collaboration with Robert Morden. The atlas project was initiated by Robert Morden in 1701 with Herman Moll as the engaver. Morden's large county maps were reduced in size and simplified to produce a pocket edition of his large county atlas.
Upon Morden's death, Moll took over the project, but continued to credit most of the county maps to Morden. The maps of Scotland, England, and Ireland, however, are Moll's own creations. They follow the geographical models later used by Moll for great masterpiece atlas "The World Described", so it is entirely plausible that these small maps were a first draft for those much larger maps. Moll's large map of Scotland was not completed until 1714.
Small inset map of Orkney & Shetland. Vibrant original hand colour. [SCOT1807]
