A large, folding world map by two of the great German geographers of the Victorian Age, Berghaus & Stülpnagel, but published in English. Shipping routes are coloured to show which company operated each route. The map itself is undated, but we can estimate a date of 1867 based on the following details:

1. Italy is shown as a unified nation (1861), but does not yet control Rome (1870).

2. Romania is shown as a distinct entity, but remains subject to the Ottoman Empire (1862-1877).

3. Alexandra Land is used for a large portion of Central Australia, distinct from both the Northern Territory and South Australia. This name was declared in 1865.

4. The dual monarchy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is shown according to the Compromise of 1867.

5. Nebraska is shown as a state rather than a territory (1867)

6. The Suez Canal does not yet appear on the map (1869)

Large inset maps in the top corners of the map focus on proposed canals through Panama, Nicaragua, and Suez. The Suez Canal is shown as half complete in the upper-right inset, whilst several different canal routes across Central America are provided in the upper-left. Further insets at the bottom of the map show the extent of telegraph cables around the world and a wind chart of the world.
