Plan of London from Actual Survey 1835

Very fine example of John Shury's large, decorative plan of London with elaborate black and white borders featuring famous London buildings.

Geographically, it shows London in the last stages of the Georgian period, stretching from Kensington to Lime House west to east and Islington to Kennington north to south. It is set within a decorative geometric border. An additional, far more elaborate border has been added. This features 33 small vignettes of important and picturesque London buildings.

This map was first issued in 1832 and added as a free supplement to the United Kingdom Newspaper. Evidently it was a success as a further seven editions with minor differences were issued, with the latest in 1851. It is not known if Shury maintained a connection with the Newspaper but its name disappears after the 1832 edition.

There were two formats: either as black and white folding examples or as segmented folding maps fitting in a case. The majority of the maps were originally published in black and white.
