Tabule X Asiae

Reduced version of Waldseemuller's map of India on a Ptolemaic projection. This edition bound in the Fries atlas published by the Treschel brothers.

Due to the projection, the area of the Deccan and southern India has been much truncated. Little of the nomenclature is recognisable although the two major river deltas, the Indus and the Ganges are clearly marked.

First published in 1513, this is one of the earliest available maps of the sub-continent.  The work was then re-issued by Lorenz Fries, who reduced it in size, as well as augmenting and revising it, first in 1522 and then again in 1525. This example is from the 1535 edition, published in Paris by the Treschel brothers. This edition is famous for its illustrated reverse in an architectural style. Image available on request.
