A vintage airline poster showing the routes and airports across the British Empire served by Imperial Airways in 1936. The basic outline of the map is credited to the venerable firm of Edward Stanford but the overprinted additions were provided by Imperial Airways. A key is present on the lower left centre which shows the current routes together with projected routes. The green network are other carriers which are not mentioned by name but are likely to be Air France, Lufthansa, Aeroflot, Boeing Air Transport and the many airlines which would amalgamate to form American Airlines.
Of further note is the charming inset on the left of the map which shows a globe overprinted with a diagram reminiscent of Harry Beck's newly published schematic of the London Underground but with airports such as Bahrain, Karachi and Hong Kong instead of stations. The colour coding refers to frequency of service which is keyed on the lower part of the globe.
Original colour. Laid on linen. [WLD4730]
