Map of Afghanistan and the adjacent Countries
This fine map of Northwest India or modern Pakistan, the Punjab and Afghanistan was used to illustrate Edward Parry Thornton’s “A Gazetteer of the countries adjacent to India on the North-West.”
Thornton was an extremely able employee of the British East India Company, rising to become the judicial commissioner for the Punjab and was made a Companion of the Bath in 1860. He retired in 1862.
As well as excelling in his administrative duties, Thornton wrote a series of volumes on both the history and activities of the British East India Company and historical works on British India.
Due to his unrivalled access to the archives of the Company, his map is one of the most accurate pieces of cartography commercially available at the time. The work was issued by one of the foremost publishers of the day, William Houghton Allen & Co. and the map is credited to the surveys held by the British East Indian Company. [IC2853]
