Survey for a Canal by the Sopoa to Port Salinas in Coasta Rica
Simple sketch map of the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica marking the river systems that flow between (Lake Nicaragua) and the Port of Salinas on the south coast. Map to support a paper for a canal route by Dr. Andreas Oersted, a Danish botanist and explorer who surveyed the area in 1851.
A handbook on the subject of Costa Rica, published by the "International Bureau of the American Republics" in 1892, remarks that...
"Famous Danish scientist, Andreas Oersted, so well known for his discoveries in natural philosophy made, in 1851, at the request of the Costa Rican Government, a survey for a canal through the river Sapoa to the port of Salinas, or Bolaños, in Costa Rica, and suggested some plans which, if carried on might prove, perhaps, to be of immense advantage to the country."
