A vintage pictorial map of Devon published shortly after WW2 to celebrate the county's contribution to the war effort and to raise money for the Women's Land Army Benevolent Fund. Useful commodities are named in the regions where they were produced. These are largely agricultural products, but there are several more interesting notes, including silk parachutes near Tiverton and sea weed which was collected for penicillin manufacture.
The map also highlights how much land was given over to the Ministry of Defence and the US Army for training and research during the war. This includes 44,000 acres near South Molton, the tank range on Dartmoor, and the total evacuation of 3,000 residents from 20,000 acres of land near Slapton Sands to create a training area for the D-Day landings.
A small inset in the lower-left corner contains an excerpt from Churchill's 'The Spirit of All' speech from February 1940. The map is further embellished by the arms of the various army, navy, and air force groups stationed in Devon at various times during the war.
