Pinax Ptolemaicus Chlmydoeides
A miniature Ptolemaic world map, beautifully engraved by Melchior Tavernier, showing only the parts of the world known to the ancient Greco-Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemy. The Americas, the Pacific Ocean, and Southern Africa are all missing from the Ptolemaic world view which believed the Earth to be about thirty percent smaller than in reality.
This is one of three 'ancient' world maps included by Bertius in his instructional work 'Geographia Vetus & Antiquis, et Melioris...'. The other two classical maps show the world according to Pomponius Mela and Poseidonius. Panels of text below the map list the maps in a standard Ptolemaic atlas.
