Isole Filippine
Extremely attractive map of the Philippine Islands based on Velarde's wall map. Upon its publication in 1734, Father Murillo Velarde’s monumental map of the Philippines was immediately recognised as the authoritative map of the islands of the 18th century and indeed of the early 19th century. Several of the most famous map makers of this period, such as Homanns Heirs, Bellin and Zatta based their own maps of the region on Velarde’s.
Due to its size, aesthetics and availability, Zatta’s map has become one of the most collectable of these Velarde derivatives. It was issued in his four volume “Atlante Novissimo” and characterised by his use of original colour and a fanciful but charming cartouche on the upper right. This features a remarkably European harbour scene but with a large oyster shell containing multiple pearls on the foreground.
One of the most famous and attractive maps of the Philippines available from the 18th century.
Original colour.
