Large linen back folding map of India drawn to show the administrative regions of the sub-continent.
This map was originally drawn on a smaller format as part of the Parliamentary Papers for the British Government, using primary government sources. It was part of a series illustrating the environmental, commercial, hydrographic and ethnographic divisions of India. Those maps were published in 1885. Trelawney Saunders, the geographer responsible for the initial series of maps, believed that the project could be commercially viable and asked permission to publish it for sale. It was granted and Saunders revised, augmented and produced the maps in atlas form on a larger scale in 1889.
The atlas was published by Edward Stanford, Saunders’ former business partner and one of the leading map publishers of that time.
Printed colour.
