L'Isle de Borneo suivant les memoires des plus Celebres Navigateurs
Reduced version of van der Aa's map of Borneo first issued in 1713. This is the Covens and Mortier edition published c.1730.
The map is originally based on surveys provided by the Dutch East India Company. It first appeared in this format in van der Aa's earlier atlas, "Le Theatre du Monde" in 1713 and then became the cartographer's standard map of the island. It was included in travel books, later issues of his atlases and his extraordinary "Galerie Agreable du Monde" the largest universal geography ever issued running to 66 volumes when complete.
Covens & Mortier, ever the canny businessmen, issued an abridged atlas of van der Aa's maps, slightly reduced and under their own imprint.
