Wall map of Aberdeen and Banff in Scotland. Four leaves, joined as two pairs, separated into northern and southern sections.

These are the four sheets which correspond to Aberdeen and Banff Shires from Thomson’s landmark Atlas of Scotland. This work was only the second regional atlas dedicated to Scotland, the first being published by Blaeu in 1654. Thomson spared no expense on this passion project and the work was not fully completed until 1832 although individual maps bear engraving dates as they were also sold as separate issues at the time of their completion as Thomson desperately attempted to regain some of the finances he had already expended on the project.
The result, although a financial failure in its time, is now recognised as being one of the finest atlases engraved in the early 19th century. Its attention to detail and clarity is without parallel and all of the geographical information is based on totally new surveys commissioned by Thomson. Unusually, the surveyors are credited under the title cartouche.
Thomson decided to amalgamate these two regions, combining the finished product into a large wall map comprising of four leaves of the atlas.
Sold as a pair. Original hand colour.
