Map of Western Palestine from Surveys Conducted for the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund
A monumental wall map of Israel and Palestine showing the mountain ranges and river basins in the region. Other water sources, such as wells, aqueducts, and springs are also marked on the map, as are mosques, ruins, watch towers, telegraph lines, and wine presses.
The surveys from which this map was compiled were conducted on behalf of the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund with assistance from the War Office. The fieldwork was carried out between 1872 and 1877 by Lieutenants Claude Reignier Conder and Herbert Kitchener, the future Secretary of State for War during the First World War. Their survey of Western Palestine was the first truly scientific survey of the region and was a landmark achievement.
This 'Special Edition' of Conder and Kitchener's map has been updated by Trelawney Saunders and Stanford's Geographical Establishment to include information about the rivers and drainage basins across the region. It was published to accompany 'An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine: Its Waterways, Plains, & Highlands', authored by Trelawney Saunders. The margins are filled with elevation cross-sections showing the peaks of Mount Carmel, the Mountains of Judea, and the Hills of Samaria, as well as the steep drop in elevation down to the Dead Sea.
Printed colour. [Folded]
