Carte Nouvelle d'Afrique
General map of the African continent based on de L'Isle's early map of the 1720s but now updated with the latest information.
There is an informative panel about the continent on the left, together with the method that the cartographer used to calculate its size. Although the interior is still filled with mythical kingdoms and empires, some of the more fantastical features of African geography, such as its division into islands by its major rivers, is no longer there.
Philippe de Pretot was the overseer of the production of this series of maps. De Pretot was also a Royal Censor or a member of a panel of experts who determined if a particular work, in this case, the atlas, was deemed to deserve to be published with a Royal Privilege, The artist responsible for this map was Maurille Moithey.
