Schematic map of Ho-Pe or modern Hebei published as part of an educational primer for students at the Jesuit College of St. Ignatius of Zikawei.
Jouon was a Jesuit lecturer or teacher at St. Ignatius College, a part of the Jesuit Cathedral of Zikawei or modern Xujiahui in Shanghai. It was built between 1906-10 and called the “grandest Catholic Church in the Far East.”
Jouon produced this work of schematic maps as a simple introduction to the commercial and logistical geography of mostly China but also parts of the Far East. The work went through several editions attesting to its enduring success and popularity.
This map of Hebei on the northeast coast of China focuses on the major towns, railways and the newly running air mail service.
Printed colour.
