Terra Firma et Novum Regnum Granatense et Popayan

Beautiful example of Jansson's map of Colombia encompassing modern Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica and parts of Venezuela and Brazil.

As with many of the Dutch regional maps of North and South America published during the Dutch Golden Age, this map is based on a map first issued by Johannes de Laet in his History of the New World, one of the finest and most influential geographical works of the 17th century. De Laet was a wealthy individual with a fascination for the region as well as a director of the Dutch West India Company and he found a kindred soul in Hessel Gerritz, former apprentice to Wilhelm Blaeu. Gerritz was the official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company and most unusually, he joined an expedition and physically travelled to the West Indies. Upon his return, Gerritz contributed many maps to de Laet’s work.
Although the geography is based on de Laet, the aesthetics on Jansson’s map are very much his own with two large compass roses and a cartouche on the centre right. <br> <br>This example of the map has been embellished by particularly rich original hand colour.
