La Nuova Zelanda
Early decorative map of New Zealand based on Cook. Showing the route of the sloop Endeavour as Cook carefully surveyed the coasts of the islands.
Out of all the Cook derivative maps of New Zealand, Zatta's version is considered to be the most attractive. Unlike its contemporaries, it bears a fanciful scene from the islands on the upper left. It shows a harbour scene with a boat house and several palm trees. These were a staple on Zatta's cartouches indicating exotic and unknown landscapes and he uses them liberally on his maps. Thankfully, he stops short of using an African lion on this cartouche, a creature which is prominent on his map of the Americas.
A note on the lower right states that Zatta sourced this map from a French edition of Cook's original issued in 1774. Original hand colour.
