Nouvelle Carte de l'Etat de Milan avec un partie du Montferrat, du Piemont, et de la Suisse
A beautiful Italian map of the Duchy of Milan, which in the late-18th century included most of Lombardy and parts of modern-day Piedmont and Switzerland. This map features the major cities of Cremona, Piacenza, Novara, Pavia, and Alessandria, along with hundreds of smaller cities, towns, and villages. Lake Como, Lake Lugano, and Lago Maggiore are also included on the map.
A large inset shows the Duchy of Mantua, which was briefly united with the Duchy of Milan in 1786 by order of the Holy Roman Emperor, but regained independence in 1791, before falling to Napoleon's invasion of Northern Italy in 1797.
An elaborate title cartouche framed with agricultural products celebrates the region's wealth and fertility.
Original hand-colour.
