A handsome example of John Cary's important and exceptionally detailed six-sheet map of England and Wales, here presented in three folding sections with its original slipcase. This is a posthumous edition published by Cary's two sons, George and John in 1833.

As the map's title suggests, all of the "direct and principal cross roads, the course of the rivers and navigable canals, cities, markets and borough towns, the principal village, parks &c." are painstakingly charted on the map. Polling places for county elections are also noted. A key in the bottom-left corner explains the map's symbology. Curiously, this map also notes three of Britain's earliest railways: the Liverpool-Manchester Railway, the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol, and the London & Southern Railway to Southampton. As there is no mention of railways in the map's key, these must have been a very recent addition to the map. They are distinguished by thick, black, double lines.
