Asiatic Archipelago

Folding map of South East Asia, with the best trade routes for different times of the year marked. The map is rich with coastal detail and dates for the European discoveries of various parts, including New Guinea (1527) and northern Australia (1618 & 1628). The colouring of the map illustrates the European territories as follows; Dutch – brown, Spanish – yellow, British – red/pink.

The inset map of Singapore is based on a survey by Captain James Franklin, a surveyor from Bengal, who in 1824 produced the first scientific map of the island. A paragraph next to the inset map describes the history of the island as well as its importance as a "commercial emporium".

Also included is an inset of the island of Labuan, Malaysian territory just north of Borneo’s the Brunei Bay, as surveyed by Capt. Sir Edward Belcher and Lieut. D. M. Gordon.
