This splendid folding map of London extends from Hammersmith to Greenwich and from Camberwell to Stoke Newington. It includes a key for calculating hackney cab and postage fares. The geographical survey is credited to John Outhett whose trigonometrical methods are explained in the panel of text below the map. Also included in this lower panel are methods for calculating postage rates for letters and parcels of various sizes, as well as the rates and regulations for hackney carriages, the 'black cab' of Victorian London.
This map, variants of which were first published by Robert Holmes Laurie as early as 1820, was published in multiple editions and frequently updated to reflect the rapid developments occurring across London in the 19th century. The earliest examples did not include any areas west of Chelsea, for example - the two westernmost panels showing Kensington, Fulham, Notting Hill, Earl's Court, Kensal Green, and Hammersmith were only added in the 1837 edition. The red grid squares and the panel of text below the map first appeared on the 1842 edition.
Original hand colour. [Folded]
