Extraordinary map of Eastern China showing the routes and conflicts of the Taiping Rebellion which lasted approximately from 1850 to 1864.
The map is generally schematic. The outline is based on a larger map issued by the Survey of India for military commanders during the Second Opium War. It shows the location of major cities but little further detail. Its main function is to show the route of the Taiping Wang (King or Prince) and his army as it marched through eastern China. At its most southern, the map shows the location in Yun-Man or modern Kunming City in Yunnan Province while its most northern point is shown near Tien tsin, or modern Tianjin.
Numerous text panels detail events and clashes between Taiping and government forces between 1852 and 1860. Small symbols (red crosses) also show areas under Taiping control and fainter lines show the routes of supplementary Taiping armies.
A fascinating contemporaneous document about a conflict that was very obscure to Europeans during its approximate fourteen year duration.
Printed colour.
