Galignani's Plan of Paris and Environs
A colourful folding map of Paris delineating the city's 20 arrondissements. Important buildings are filled in black. An inset map shows the environs of Paris and its railway lines. The map itself is undated, but the presence of the Petite Ceinture railway which circles the city inside the Theirs Wall allows us to date the map to circa 1860.
This map was published by the Galignani publishing firm as a guide for English visitors to Paris. Founded as an English library and language school in 1800 by Giovanni Antonio Galignani, the firm transitioned into English-language publishing around 1808 with a literary review and a daily newspaper. Galignani's became an important hub for the English expatriate community in Paris, offering English literature, newspapers, maps, and guidebooks. Upon Giovanni's death in 1821, his sons, Anthony and William, took over the firm with great success. Their popular guidebook to Paris was frequently re-issued and updated to reflect the changing face of the city.
