A fascinating map of the Levant showing the Israeli campaign during the Suez Crisis of 1956, also known as the Second Arab-Israeli War or the Sinai War. Published in English and Hebrew. Israeli troop movements are marked with green arrows and the dates of each operation are also marked. Roads are marked with red lines, railways with black lines. Oil fields, pipelines, and refineries are all marked on the map as well. The map was published by Ariel Printing Press and drawn by Dr. J Shapiro [Szapiro].



The Suez Crisis was a military operation by Israel, Britain, and France to take control of the Suez Canal after it was nationalized by the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. Lasting from the 29th of October to the 5th of November, the operation met with immediate condemnation from the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Nations. British and French paratroopers were able to capture the Suez Canal and Israel briefly occupied the Sinai Peninsula, but international pressure ultimately forced the three nations to withdraw, ceding the Canal back to Egyptian control. The Suez Crisis was a humiliation for Britain and France as it cemented Nasser's grip on Egypt and is often considered the end of Britain's role as a major world power.
