Highly detailed copper-engraved map of England and Wales published during the mid-18th Century, showing county divisions, rivers and settlements, and with emphasis on the expansive road network and distances between major towns and cities.
In the upper left a table of the Counties and their size in square miles, and below to the left a key to the icons used across the map as to the type of roads, towns and cities.
A grand dedication is engraved in the lower left of the map addressed to "His Royal Higness Frederick, Prince of Wales" who died in 1751. He was due to ascend to the throne from 1727. In the English Channel, just inside the neatline, there is a curious comment: This Map has been Copied four times very confused and Scandalously.
This map was first issued in 1717, and again in 1732 following the death of Herman Moll, this time published by Thomas and John Bowles - it is likely they purchased his inventory when Moll died.
Original minimal outline colour. [GB2026]
