The opening of the first passenger railway in the United Kingdom in 1830 heralded the dawn of a new age, one which transformed Britain almost overnight. Published just over a decade later, this map shows how quickly new railways were constructed, a trend which continued until the invention of the automobile.

As mentioned in the map's gloriously florid title, thousands of depth soundings around the coasts are shown, as are sand banks and other maritime hazards - lighthouses are also noted. All of the cities, towns, and "substantial villages" are also included on this richly detailed map. The map is divided into counties by colour. Two small inset maps show the Channel Islands and Orkney & Shetland.
