Highly detailed and important survey of St. Kitts and Nevis performed originally in 1848 by Captain E. Barnett. Further insets detail St. Eustatius and Saba of the Dutch Antilles.


By 1848, Captain E. Barnett was a veteran surveyor of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, with his first posting to the area as a Lieut. Commander in the Cutter Jackdaw in 1833. Included amongst the important surveys he produced were charts of Anguilla, St. Barts and St. Martin's, Providence in the Bahamas and Antigua as well as this beautiful chart of St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Eustatius and Saba. He rose to the active rank of Captain in 1846 and retired as a full Admiral in 1877. Remarkably, he first entered the Navy as a volunteer deckhand. Ultimately, he spent 22 years of his career surveying seas and islands in the West Indies.


This chart is noted for its beauty and clarity, cited in several works about the history of St. Kitts and Nevis. The lower left corner cites small corrections to 1949.


A stamp on the lower left margin denotes this chart as previously being part of the archive of Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners, a firm of civil engineers. Gibb was a former Civil Engineer in Chief to the Admiralty during the Great War. A manuscript "W3", again on the lower left margin is most likely an internal location reference. SL [WIND4201]
