Admiralty chart of the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah showing the incredibly complex network of sand banks which surrounded the harbour in 1921. A large inset focuses on the inner anchorage and the city in greater detail.
At the time of publication, Jeddah was still a small, walled city. Almost all of the buildings marked are important public buildings or buildings which would have been visible from the sea. These incude the city's mosques, foreign consulates, the post office, and local barracks. Interestingly, the map also marks the offices of Gellatly, Hankey, Sewell & Co, a London-based shipbroker with an office in Jeddah.
The first edition of this map was published in 1878 from surveys conducted by Commander Wharton of the Royal Navy on his ship, H.M.S "Fawn". New, updated editions followed in 1905 and 1915. This is an example of the 1915 edition, but with further minor revisions to 1921.
